| Dean
Buchanan’s art reflects his energy, passion and connection to
the
New Zealand landscape and environment. To help raise funds for
the Kaipara Harbour, Dean has two paintings for sale - a beautiful
vibrant oil on canvas, “Kaipara Harbour"
and an oil on raw hessian, "Kaipara Oval". Dean is one of New Zealand’s best known contemporary landscape artists both in this country and around the world. Since 1978, he has exhibited widely throughout New Zealand and won many art awards. Last year his exhibition in Barcelona continued his record of exhibiting overseas in Chile, the USA, Belgium and Japan. Dean was born in Auckland in 1952 and during his high school years he was fortunate to have Ralph Hotere as his art teacher. Spending time with luminaries such as James K. Baxter also gave him the inspiration and impetus to find his own particular form of expression. Based in Karekare, Dean has a profound love for native New Zealand that he expresses in complex, kaleidoscopic vistas. His style is known as ‘neo-expressionism’, and communicates ideas that often position the painter in the role of a critic and outside mainstream society. His work is in public collections at the Auckland City Art Gallery, Govett Brewster Gallery New Plymouth, Wellington University, Central Institute of Fine Arts Beijing China, Auckland College of Education, Gisborne Museum and Art Gallery, Whangarei City Council, and Otago University. His paintings also hang in private collections in New Zealand, Australia, USA, France, Great Britain, Switzerland, Japan, and Denmark. |
