| Gaylene
has a passion for our
natural places, particularly the Waitakere Range coast and forest where
she lives. She is happiest when in the great outdoors, walking,
savouring the view, planting native trees or exploring the bush. Recent paintings, the Anawhata, Nikau and now the Bush Walk series are a response to her experience of, or sense of, place. Of paramount concern is the creation of a satisfying mood, through colour, composition and mark making. Other works have evolved from an emotional response to an experience or childhood memories where colour and personal symbols are all important such as the Marae series. Purely playful pieces like the Calendar series, are just for the sheer fun of giving it a whirl and laying on the paint with brush, knife, rag or fingers. Gaylene works in oils, acrylics or charcoal on canvas, board or paper, enjoying the process of developing a theme. Her styles range from figurative to abstract. She can be found in her studio or the bush most days and is now painting full time. |
