| Peter
Panyoczki was born in Budapest in Hungary
and escaped the 1956 revolution with his parents to live in
Switzerland. At the University of Zurich he studied German
language and literature, and art history, graduating Master of Arts in
1980. He worked as an assistant for German language at the
Purdue University in Lafayette where he wrote and directed the film,
"First Love" based on Samuel Beckett's novella. In the 1980s he did various studies and studio stays in Rotterdam, Florence, and Vienna, teaching and lecturing on language and art. In 1990 he had a studio stay in the Barcelona Project: 'Hannibal - a meditative travel research on Vanitas through Northern Africa', and in 1991 created during his travels, the poetic video Hannibal. He visited New Zealand for the first time in 1992. In 1993 he studied in Budapest and realised the first part of the Babylon Project (an interactive artist dialogue) with Janos Kalmar and Joerg Spamer at the Goethe Institute. The same year he married Tatjana in Budapest. In 1994 he made a video in Zurich for the Jazz Performance Kleinzeit with "No Secrets in the Family". In 1995, Peter moved to New Zealand and became a resident before the birth of his son, Janos. Between 1995 and 1998 he lived in Auckland and Switzerland, realized commissions for public buildings in Europe, and became a New Zealand citizen. In 1999 he begins to realize a synergetic project in New Zealand called 'The Kaipara Project' to create in New Zealand a platform, where artists, scientists, musicians etc. from New Zealand and overseas have a possibility to meet and to stay in residence, to work and communicate their ideas at seminars and symposia. In 2002 he established the Kaipara Foundation for this purpose. He now works as an artist in Kaiwaka and exhibits internationally. Since 1979, Peter has exhibited in galleries throughout Europe, and in the USA. In 2005 he exhibited in Miami, Baden, Mahurangi, Auckland, and Lebanon. Last year he had exhibitions in the Marie-Louise Wirth Gallery in Hochfelden in Switzerland and at the Red Gallery in Nelson. In Auckland, Peter is represented by the Bath Street Gallery. |
